The invisible difference that determines your heating bill

The invisible difference that determines your heating bill
A difference of just 1 mm in window system insulation can mean significantly higher heating and cooling costs, reduced comfort and shorter service life over time. Although seemingly insignificant on paper, shallower profiles or poorer Uw values become real financial losses over years of use. This article explains why technical details often overlooked by investors decisively affect energy efficiency, system stability and overall investment value.

What does 1 mm of poorer insulation really cost?

Investors often compare window specifications and prices for the best balance of quality and budget. A 1 mm profile-thickness difference or slightly better Uw value may seem negligible. Yet these small details determine long-term differences in energy consumption, comfort and system durability.

For example, Uw 1.2 W/m²K versus Uw 0.9 W/m²K looks minimal on paper. In buildings with large glazed areas, it means continuous winter heat loss and greater summer heating. Converted into annual heating and cooling bills, the amount is substantial. Across ten years, it becomes a serious cost.

Besides finances, poorer insulation affects comfort. Lower interior glass surface temperatures can create a cold radiant sensation, require more heating and increase condensation risk. This concerns quality of life as well as energy.

Technically, another millimetre of system depth often provides better structural performance, more stable hardware operation, better glazing and longer window life. Thinner, weaker systems in larger units may be more vulnerable to loads, increasing long-term adjustment and servicing needs.

Saving a few percent initially can become far greater expense over time. Better systems instead offer faster returns through lower energy use and more stable performance.

A window is an energy barrier and structural element directly affecting building value, beyond an opening in a wall. A 1 mm difference can separate short-term savings from long-term value.

The real question is not what a better system costs, but what its absence will cost in the years ahead.

WE CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

All wooden components carry PEFC certification (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), an internationally recognised certification confirming that wood and paper products come from sustainably managed forests. PEFC promotes responsible forest management to ensure the conservation of biodiversity, the protection of ecosystems and the long-term sustainability of forests.

This certification allows consumers to identify products sourced from sustainably managed forests, helping to reduce deforestation and protect natural resources. PEFC certification covers the entire supply chain, from the forest to the finished product, ensuring transparency and accountability in the forestry industry
