When is the right time to replace your windows and doors?

Windows and doors play a key role in keeping our home environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, healthy, comfortable and secure. However, like any other material, windows and doors have a limited service life. Various signs indicate that old windows and doors have reached the end of their useful life.
It is important to recognise when something is wrong with your windows and doors and when they need replacing. Some of the signs are:
Unwanted airflow through windows
Feeling a draught near your existing windows and doors is the first sign that valuable energy is being lost, indicating a need for replacement. Cold air entering your home in winter or heat in summer calls for urgent action. Even minimal airflow around windows over a long period can significantly increase heating or cooling bills.
You may be able to solve this problem temporarily by fitting seals, but in the long term you should consider replacing all your windows and doors with a newer, more modern option. Although fitting insulating tape, rubber seals or aluminium strips can be an additional expense, it will not solve energy loss in the long term. High-quality PVC windows and doors prevent heat loss in winter and cold air entering in summer, providing a more energy-efficient solution.
High heating bills may be a sign that it is time to replace your windows and doors
Windows and doors with poor energy efficiency can result in high energy bills. Investing in new, energy-efficient PVC windows and doors can bring long-term savings. Thanks to improved insulation, they reduce winter heating and summer cooling costs and pay for themselves over time.
Difficulty opening and closing windows and doors may indicate that they are in poor condition.
When opening or closing windows and doors becomes difficult, this indicates a need for refurbishment or replacement. Apart from being difficult to use, such windows and doors pose a potential risk, especially in emergencies such as fire or flooding. If windows and doors cannot be closed and locked properly, the risk of burglary also increases. Windows and doors should operate smoothly, so if you notice difficulty opening or closing them, consider replacing them.

Condensation between the panes
If you notice condensation between window panes, this indicates inadequate insulation and reduced energy efficiency. Newer generations of windows use low-emissivity glass and a gas such as argon between the panes to improve insulation. This technology retains heat indoors and reduces heat loss by up to 50% compared with ordinary glass.
Windows and doors that no longer look attractive
As well as practical characteristics, the appearance of windows and doors matters greatly. If you notice that your windows and doors are worn, dry, cracked, with peeling paint and varnish, difficult to maintain and no longer attractive, it may be time to replace them. Appearance greatly affects the atmosphere in your home. PVC windows and doors require minimal maintenance and are more energy-efficient than old windows and doors, adding value to your home.
Furniture and flooring faded by sunlight
If you notice carpets, furniture and window frames losing their colour, this may indicate that your windows or glazing do not provide adequate UV protection. New regulations require a high level of UV protection, achieved using low-emissivity (Low-E) glass. This glass has special thin-film coatings on its inner surface and usually has argon between the panes. Together, these coatings and gas filling provide effective UV protection, preserving carpets, furniture and other items from fading.
Windows and doors can be replaced at any time of year.
Poorly sealed windows and doors can increase the energy used to heat or cool rooms. This problem is often postponed until the following winter, but that can be a mistake because air conditioners are frequently used during summer. High-quality windows and doors will not allow cool air to escape from your building during summer.
The right time to replace your windows and doors is whenever it suits you; they can be replaced at any time of year. In the past, replacement was mainly done in spring, summer and autumn, but installation methods have advanced, and it is now quite normal to replace all windows and doors within a few hours or a single day, even when there is snow outside.
Deciding to replace worn-out windows and doors is not straightforward and requires some research and consultation with experts. It is important to choose the window profile, glazing type and thickness, and accessories (roller shutters, insect screens) that best suit your home.
