Fireworks outside, silence inside – how to begin the New Year peacefully
New Year rarely arrives quietly in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cities. Fireworks, public celebrations, loud music and traffic continue late into the night, often joined by winter smog. While the city celebrates, many realise the best start to the year would be peace at home.
Such moments reveal how important the quality of our living space is for everyday life, health and a sense of security.
In cities such as Sarajevo, Tuzla and Zenica, noise and air pollution are winter realities rather than occasional events. New Year emphasises what we regularly endure: unrelenting sounds and air we often do not want inside.
When windows and doors lack good insulation, street noise becomes part of the living room. Fireworks, music and gatherings enter, disturb sleep and create discomfort. Poorly sealed joints also admit cold air, unpleasant smells and fine pollution particles.
Window and door sound insulation is measured by Rw in decibels. Higher values mean better protection against outside noise. The difference between standard products and those adapted to urban conditions may look small on paper but is enormous in practice, especially on the year’s loudest night.
Glass is equally important. Asymmetric, laminated and triple insulating glazing do more than retain warmth: they disrupt sound waves and create another barrier between celebrations outside and silence inside. Quality seals and correct installation turn the home into a protected system rather than separate components.
Winter and New Year discussions often mention PM2.5 and PM10: fine pollutants from combustion, traffic and industry. Alongside smoke and dust, they enter most easily through poorly sealed windows. Quality windows and doors cannot solve citywide air pollution but can greatly improve what we breathe at home.
New Year is therefore a symbolic beginning and a good time to consider changes with lasting benefits. Peaceful sleep, quiet evenings, warmer rooms and healthier indoor air are becoming basic needs of modern urban life rather than luxuries.
While the city celebrates, home can remain a place of peace, quiet and security. Sometimes that is the best possible start to the coming year.
