Insufficient ventilation oversaturates the air with moisture, causing condensation. Relative humidity determines how much moisture air can retain; condensation forms when saturation is reached.
The most common moisture sources are:
- Showering, cooking, ironing and drying laundry
- Large numbers of houseplants
- Insufficiently heated rooms
- Several people present (breathing releases water vapour – a family can produce over 10 litres of vapour daily)
To prevent condensation, ventilate rooms several times daily, especially kitchens and bathrooms. Open windows fully rather than leaving them tilted, as prolonged tilt ventilation can increase heating costs without significantly reducing humidity.
